What is the dark web?

The dark web is a layer of the internet intentionally hidden and accessible only through special software, authorization, and configurations. There are no .com, .net, or other familiar top-level domains. Instead, dark web URLs end in .onion — and traditional web browsers will return error messages when trying to access them.

Because of its anonymity, it’s often used by criminals ranging from drug dealers to hackers to terrorists who can host illegal marketplaces selling all manner of illicit or illegal goods — including stolen Personally Identifiable Information (PII) including Social Security numbers, credit card and bank account numbers, and even medical records.

If the “regular” internet is a superhighway, the dark web would be the tunnels running underneath the pavement.

How does dark web monitoring protect my identity?

Protecting your personal information is our highest priority. When you enroll in dark web monitoring you’ll choose the details you want monitored, including driver’s license numbers, credit and debit cards, IP addresses, and more.

From there our artificial intelligence scours the dark web, scrutinizing dark web marketplaces and lists for the information you want monitored. At the same time, our human operatives infiltrate forums, botnets, and chat rooms where identity thieves share stolen information along with tips and strategies for stealing or exploiting more.

What happens if my information is found on the dark web?

If your personal information ends up on the dark web, it doesn’t automatically mean you’re a victim of fraud or identity theft. However, it can make you a much easier target for future identity theft, scams, and phishing attempts.

If we detect your Personally Identifiable Information (PII) on the dark web, we’ll notify you immediately and advise you on steps you can quickly take — like changing your passwords and freezing your credit file — to help protect yourself.
